New Delhi, July 21: Vasisthasana, also known as Side Plank Pose, is a powerful yoga asana that enhances physical strength and mental focus. This practice is not merely a side plank; it is a pathway to achieving inner balance by challenging your limits.
The term ‘Vasisthasana’ is derived from two Sanskrit words. ‘Vasistha’ means ‘the best’ or ‘superior,’ while ‘asana’ translates to ‘posture’ or ‘seat.’ During this pose, the body’s weight is balanced on one hand and the outer edge of one foot. From head to heel, the body forms a straight diagonal line, with the other hand extended straight up, and the gaze directed towards the raised hand. This asana fosters balance, stability, and concentration.
The Ministry of AYUSH has also highlighted the significance of this pose. According to them, Vasisthasana (Side Plank) is a key yoga practice that enhances balance and physical strength. Regular practice of this posture is highly effective in improving body posture during activities like walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
To perform this asana, start by sitting on the ground with your legs extended straight in front of you. Place your palms on the ground near your hips. Gradually shift your entire body weight onto your right palm and the outer edge of your right foot. Now, place your left foot directly on top of your right foot. Rest your left hand on your waist and lift your body upwards using the strength of your right hand. Inhale deeply and raise your left hand straight up towards the sky. Turn your neck upwards and gaze at your left fingertips. Your body should remain in a straight line during this position. Hold your breath normally for a few seconds in this pose. Then, exhale slowly and return to the starting position.
Avoid this asana if you have serious injuries or pain in your wrist, elbow, or shoulder.
