New Delhi, March 17: The UConn Huskies, the reigning national champions, have been named the No. 1 overall seed in the women’s NCAA tournament, finishing the season with an impressive 34-0 record. This decision comes after a close competition with the UCLA Bruins for the top seed.
Both teams earned No. 1 seeds and could potentially face each other in the national championship game. Amanda Braun, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee, provided insights into the committee’s decision.
“The debate was quite close throughout the process. Both teams have had outstanding seasons. We conducted a committee vote and analyzed numerous games from both UConn and UCLA. Ultimately, the vote favored UConn,” Braun shared with ESPN. “We discussed observable components extensively, particularly how UConn performed consistently from start to finish this year.”
While UCLA boasts 19 Quad 1 wins against elite competition, UConn managed only nine. However, the memory of UConn’s decisive victory over UCLA in last year’s Final Four likely influenced the committee’s decision.
UCLA’s only loss this season came in a November neutral site game against the Texas Longhorns, who they may face again in the Final Four. Should both No. 1 seeds advance, they will compete for a spot in the national championship game.
Before UCLA can focus on the Final Four, they must first contend with No. 16 seed California Baptist on Saturday night.
