Srinagar, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir announced on Monday the arrest of two officials from the Women Development Corporation on charges of bribery.
According to an ACB statement, the officials, identified as field supervisors, were caught red-handed while demanding and accepting bribes. The bureau had received a written complaint alleging that Owais Ahmad Khan, a field supervisor, sought an illegal bribe from a complainant in exchange for facilitating the release of a sanctioned loan of ₹300,000 under the Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) scheme.
When the complainant refused to pay the bribe, they contacted the ACB and filed a formal complaint. Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB launched an investigation, which revealed prima facie evidence of the illegal demand for a bribe.
Subsequently, a case was registered at the ACB police station in Srinagar under Section 7 and Section 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 61(2) of the BNS, leading to an ongoing investigation.
A team was formed to set a trap. During the operation, the field supervisor was apprehended while soliciting and accepting the bribe in exchange for facilitating the release of the approved loan.
Additionally, another public servant, field supervisor Merajuddin Sheikh, was arrested at the scene for alleged involvement in the crime. The specifics of Sheikh’s role and participation are still under investigation.
The bribe amount was recovered in the presence of independent witnesses. Both accused have been subjected to medical-legal formalities and are currently held at the Shaheed Ganj police station in Srinagar. Further investigations into the case are ongoing.
