Thimphu, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar met with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in Thimphu on September 14. Kumar is on a three-day visit to the Himalayan nation, where he will also participate in the celebrations for the country’s National Voter Day.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck shared the meeting on Facebook, stating, “His Majesty the King met with India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar today during his three-day visit to Bhutan.”
An official statement indicated that this visit aims to enhance the close institutional collaboration between the Election Commission of India and Bhutan’s Election Commission, furthering their ongoing cooperation.
A highlight of Kumar’s trip will be the National Voter Day celebration at the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law in Paro on Tuesday, where he will serve as the chief guest.
On Wednesday, Kumar is scheduled to meet with Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Shering Tobgay in Thimphu. The statement noted that he will also engage with senior civil servants of Bhutan.
The Indian Embassy in Bhutan recently reported that last month, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck met with his wife, Jetsun Pema, and officials from the Bhutan-India Friendship Association at India House.
The embassy mentioned on X, “Officials from the Bhutan-India Friendship Association chapters in Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Samtse, Gelephu, Nganglam, and Samdrup Jongkhar met today at India House. The event was attended by the King and Her Majesty Ashi Deky Yanzom.”
The statement concluded, “We hope to work together to strengthen and deepen relationships at the people and community levels under the unique friendship and ties between India and Bhutan.”
