Cape Town, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : A delegation from India, led by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, has arrived in Cape Town to participate in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The Indian High Commission in South Africa welcomed the delegation at Cape Town International Airport. High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar and Consul General Ruby Jaspreet greeted Singh and his team upon their arrival.
The delegation is set to engage in discussions at the conference, which runs from September 13 to 19 at the Cape Town International Convention Center. Alongside Singh, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht are also attending the event.
Hosted by the South African Parliament and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) South Africa Branch, this year’s conference focuses on the theme “Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership.”
The conference aims to bring together speakers, presiding officers, parliamentarians, and parliamentary officials from across the Commonwealth. Participants will discuss contemporary challenges facing democratic legislatures and explore ways to enhance parliamentary democracy and international cooperation.
Founded in 1911, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association connects over 180 national, state, provincial, and regional parliaments and legislatures across the Commonwealth. As one of the oldest parliamentary associations, the CPA provides a platform for members to exchange experiences, strengthen democratic governance, and promote parliamentary practices rooted in accountability, inclusion, the rule of law, and institutional integrity.
The comprehensive conference agenda will also cover topics such as inclusive and fair trade, inequality and underdevelopment, accessibility for persons with disabilities, climate adaptation and resilience in parliamentary leadership, and enhancing public engagement with parliament through post-legislative scrutiny.
