Two More Police Officers Arrested in Custodial Death Case in Vijayawada

Vijayawada, July 1: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested two additional police constables in connection with the alleged custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna.

The arrested officers, Babu Rao and Sambayya, are now the fifth and sixth individuals taken into custody in this case. They were presented in the Second ACM Court, which has ordered them to be held in judicial custody for 14 days.

The magistrate directed that Babu Rao be detained at Avanigadda Jail and Sambayya at Gannavaram Jail.

Reports indicate that the two constables, stationed at the Lanka police station, aided Circle Inspector (Station House Officer) S.S.V.V. Nagaraju, who is the main accused in this case.

Sai Krishna, aged 25, went missing after being taken into police custody on May 6. His family alleges that he was beaten to death in lockup, and his body was subsequently cremated in an electric crematorium.

According to reports, the SIT is questioning another suspect, Suresh, who is believed to be a friend of Nagaraju.

On June 29, two head constables, Ashok and Nani, surrendered to the police. The SIT interrogated them on June 30 before presenting them in court, where they were also placed in judicial custody.

It is reported that both head constables went into hiding following the arrest of the suspended SHO. The state government has since suspended them as well.

Nagaraju was arrested by the SIT on June 23, and a city court has ordered him to remain in judicial custody until July 8.

The SIT is investigating allegations against the suspended SHO for wrongful detention, murder, and destruction of evidence.

A case was registered on June 19 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on a complaint filed by Sai Krishna’s mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, alleging that her son was tortured and killed in custody.

Last week, the SIT informed the lower court that Sai Krishna died due to injuries sustained during his detention. The court was also informed that CCTV footage from the police station had been deliberately deleted.

Sai Krishna, who had several pending cases and non-bailable warrants against him, was picked up from Markpuram on May 6 and taken to the Krishna Lanka police station. The SIT has stated that he was illegally detained and subsequently went missing.

The SIT, led by Inspector General of Law and Order M. Ravi Prakash, includes West Godavari Superintendent of Police Adnan Naeem Asmi, Alluri Sitarama Raju SP Amit Bardar, and Bapatla District Additional SP L. Sudhakar as investigating officers.
