Tripura Government Appoints Guardian Ministers for District Development Oversight

Agartala, July 18: Following Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP government in Tripura has appointed ‘Guardian Ministers’ for all eight districts. Their role is to oversee development projects and ensure better coordination in implementing government programs.

According to a notification from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, 11 ministers have been assigned the responsibility of monitoring and reviewing the implementation of various development initiatives, welfare schemes, and infrastructure projects across the eight districts.

A senior official stated that Guardian Ministers will regularly review the progress of development projects, coordinate with district administration, oversee the implementation of key government schemes, address public grievances, and ensure timely completion of government initiatives.

Under this new arrangement, Guardian Ministers will operate at the district level. They will guide and monitor development works in collaboration with district administration, elected representatives (such as MLAs, district council members, and panchayat members), and officials from various departments.

As per the notification, Minister Ratan Lal Nath, responsible for electricity and agriculture, has been appointed as the Guardian Minister for the tribal-majority Dhalai district, while Finance Minister Pranjit Singha Roy has been assigned to West Tripura district.

Ministers Santana Chakma and Shukla Charan Noatia will oversee North Tripura district, while Ministers Kishore Barman and Animesh Debbarma will take charge of Gomati district.

Ministers Sudhanshu Das and Vrishketu Debbarma will supervise South Tripura district. Minister Sushant Chowdhury will manage Unakoti district, Minister Tinku Roy will oversee Khowai district, and Minister Vikas Debbarma will be the Guardian Minister for Sipahijala district.

The official mentioned that this initiative aims to strengthen oversight, enhance coordination among various government departments, expedite the implementation of welfare schemes, and ensure balanced, transparent, and effective development across all districts in the state.

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh had previously implemented a similar system of appointing Guardian Ministers for their districts to enhance administrative oversight and improve the implementation of government programs.

Political analysts believe that ahead of the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections, the BJP government is attempting to bring administration closer to the people and strengthen grassroots operations. This involves identifying shortcomings in the implementation of government schemes and development projects, with ministers directly overseeing their progress.
