Beijing, July 18: A landslide occurred in the Fengshui County of Chongqing at around 9:10 AM on Friday, burying several individuals under debris and leaving many missing.
In response to this disaster, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), President of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, took the incident seriously and issued critical directives.
He emphasized the need for a scientifically organized search and rescue operation for the missing individuals in Fengshui County. Xi also stressed the importance of preventing secondary disasters and ensuring proper management of the injured and post-disaster situations.
Furthermore, he called for an investigation into the causes of the landslide, learning lessons from the incident, and a thorough examination and prevention of potential geological hazards.
Xi instructed all relevant departments to strictly fulfill their safety responsibilities. He urged for enhanced monitoring, early warning systems, and patrols to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of China, also issued directives. He stated that Chongqing should receive all possible guidance and support for rescue operations, treatment of the injured, rehabilitation of affected individuals, and prevention of secondary disasters. Responsibilities of local bodies and relevant parties must be reinforced, and comprehensive investigations into potential risks and hazards should be conducted to ensure effective disaster prevention and relief efforts.
Following Xi Jinping’s important directives and Li Qiang’s requirements, Zhang Guoqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of China, visited the disaster site with officials from relevant departments to guide the rescue and relief efforts.
Chongqing has mobilized all resources for search and rescue operations, treatment of the injured, and further actions. Efforts are currently ongoing.
On July 18, the National Development and Reform Commission of China announced that it has allocated 30 million yuan from the central budget for emergency reconstruction and relief efforts in the areas affected by the landslide in Chongqing.
Additionally, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management released an immediate fund of 50 million yuan from the central government’s natural disaster relief fund on the same day. This funding aims to expedite rescue and relief efforts in Chongqing and assist affected individuals. It will be used for search and rescue operations, risk reduction, ensuring safety, investigating threats of secondary disasters, relocating and rehabilitating affected individuals, and repairing damaged or collapsed residential buildings, thereby minimizing losses and casualties from the disaster.
