Ranchi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Sudivya Kumar Sonu, a prominent minister in the Jharkhand government and senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2026. His death has elicited deep sorrow from various political leaders, including Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi.
Sonu’s family reported that he experienced chest pain late Saturday night at his residence in Giridih. Despite being rushed to Mercy Hospital, he could not be stabilized for transport to Ranchi and succumbed to his condition. He was 56 years old.
Governor Gangwar expressed his heartfelt condolences, describing the news of Sonu’s passing as tragic and devastating. He emphasized that the loss is irreplaceable for the state and prayed for strength for the grieving family and supporters.
Former Chief Minister Marandi shared his disbelief upon hearing the news. Initially skeptical, he confirmed the details through local contacts in Giridih. Marandi acknowledged that although Sonu belonged to a different political party, they had known each other for years, and his sudden departure is a shock to the community.
Champa Soren, another former Chief Minister, conveyed his sorrow over Sonu’s untimely demise, expressing sadness at the loss of a dedicated public servant. Minister Deepika Pandey Singh remarked on the personal impact of Sonu’s death, recalling him as a colleague and a brother-like figure. She paid tribute to his approachable nature and commitment to public service.
Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey noted that Sonu’s passing represented more than just the loss of an individual; it signified the departure of an idea, a struggle, and an inspiration. She emphasized that his contributions and positive outlook will be remembered fondly.
Sonu served as a two-time MLA from Giridih Sadar and was appointed as a cabinet minister in Hemant Soren‘s government in December 2024. He held key portfolios, including higher and technical education, urban development, housing, tourism, and culture, sports, and youth affairs. His legacy is expected to resonate within the state for years to come.
