Thiruvananthapuram, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : The BJP’s youth wing has intensified its protests against Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Sathishan across the state. This surge in demonstrations is seen as a response to the Youth Congress protests that occurred during Union Home Minister Amit Shah‘s visit to Kollam last week.
The protests have brought the ongoing political conflict between the ruling Congress-led UDF and the BJP to the forefront. Activists from the BJP’s youth organization have targeted CM Sathishan and other ministers during these demonstrations. When Home Minister Shah visited Kollam, Youth Congress members staged a protest, prompting the BJP youth wing to retaliate with their own demonstrations.
The confrontation included the state’s Sports Minister and Youth Congress President O.K. Janish. As protests escalated, BJP youth activists also protested against Janish when his vehicle passed by.
On Wednesday morning, as CM Sathishan returned to Thiruvananthapuram from Delhi, BJP youth workers staged protests. There were also reported attacks on Congress offices during these demonstrations. Two Congress offices in the district suffered vandalism, with stones allegedly thrown at them.
In response, Kerala’s Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and state Congress President and Power Minister Suni Joseph expressed strong disapproval. Chennithala acknowledged that protests are a legitimate part of democratic politics but condemned acts of vandalism. He emphasized that such incidents would not be tolerated and that action would be taken. Joseph echoed this sentiment, stating that political protests should not escalate into violence or destruction.
The situation has become increasingly serious as the new government faces aggressive street protests from opposition groups. Since taking office, CM Sathishan has opted for a smaller security detail, traveling with only a pilot and an escort vehicle, unlike his predecessor Pinarayi Vijayan. However, upon seeing an additional pilot vehicle at a recent event, Sathishan reportedly expressed his displeasure.
The latest protests have raised new concerns about the CM’s security amid the escalating political tensions between the youth organizations of the Congress and BJP. The BJP youth wing has indicated that their street protests will continue, suggesting ongoing confrontations between the two parties in the days ahead.
