Delhi Chief Minister Honors Sanitation Workers at Swachhta Hi Seva 2026 Event
CM Rekha Gupta emphasizes the importance of sanitation workers at the Swachhta Hi Seva 2026 event, advocating for their recognition and rights.

New Delhi, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Mayor Pravesh Wahi and other leaders, participated in the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva 2026’ event organized by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Wednesday.
During her address, CM Gupta expressed pride in meeting sanitation workers, particularly the many women in the field. She stated, “It is time to truly become friends with these ‘Swachhta Mitras,’ to understand their struggles, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with them. Their work is often the last priority for most in society.”
Gupta highlighted the daily challenges faced by sanitation workers, emphasizing that they deserve greater recognition for their contributions. “If given a choice among ten jobs, many would likely choose this as the last option. Yet, they have made this their livelihood. This is no easy task,” she remarked.
Recalling her own experiences during cleanliness campaigns, Gupta noted how even a few minutes of sweeping can cause discomfort, while sanitation workers perform this labor daily. “After just ten minutes of sweeping during our cleanliness drive, we felt pain in our hands. But they do this every day,” she said.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the long-standing fight sanitation workers have faced for their rights. She pointed out that it was only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office that these workers received the respect they truly deserve.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi also addressed the gathering, mentioning various welfare measures for sanitation workers. He stated that under the Prime Minister’s vision, new initiatives are continuously being introduced for their benefit. Wahi expressed pride in the Ayushman scheme, which provides up to ₹5 lakh in free medical treatment for workers in the unorganized sector.
He added that the Delhi government has provided an additional ₹5 lakh top-up, bringing the total health coverage to ₹10 lakh. “This means up to ₹10 lakh in health coverage, and all of you can benefit from this,” he concluded.
