Colombo, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : India and Sri Lanka have engaged in discussions focused on maritime issues and enhancing bilateral cooperation. The talks took place in Colombo between Dr. Aquino Wimal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for the United Nations Economic and Social Division, and Tilani Silva, Legal Advisor of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka shared details about the meeting on social media, noting that Wimal and Silva discussed maritime concerns and explored avenues for collaboration on bilateral and multilateral platforms during their discussions on September 29-30, 2026.
India has been actively involved in several development projects in Sri Lanka, including those related to health infrastructure and disaster management. Recently, India reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s public health system by sending nearly three tons of anti-tuberculosis medication to Colombo.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced that the medication was delivered via an Indian Air Force aircraft. He emphasized India’s dedication to bolstering Sri Lanka’s public health capabilities through this support.
On September 16, construction began on a new two-story accident and emergency unit at the District General Hospital in Mannar, funded by an economic grant from the Indian government. The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Health and Communications Minister Nalinida Jayatissa, and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha. The project is backed by a grant of 600 million Sri Lankan Rupees.
Earlier, on September 4, Jha inaugurated the 21st model village, “Suhadagama,” in Polonnaruwa, alongside Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Jagath Vikramaratne and Deputy Minister of Housing, Construction, and Water Supply T.B. Sarath. This model village project, funded by Indian grants, spans all 25 districts of Sri Lanka and showcases the strengthening partnership between India and Sri Lanka in fostering meaningful progress at the grassroots level.
