
Mexico City, July 2: In a heartbreaking turn of events, the joyous celebration of Mexico’s victory over Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup was marred by tragedy. The co-host nation secured a 2-0 win, advancing to the Round of 16, but shortly after, three individuals lost their lives due to asphyxiation in downtown Mexico City.
Health officials confirmed the incident, revealing that two women and one man were found unconscious near the iconic Angel of Independence monument. Thousands had gathered to celebrate Mexico’s triumph in the Round of 32 match late Tuesday night.
According to a report by ABC News, the Mexico City Health Secretariat announced on social media platform X that the deceased were aged 48, 44, and 19. However, officials did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
Mayor Clara Brugada of Mexico City shared on social media that emergency teams responded promptly upon receiving reports of the three individuals losing consciousness, but unfortunately, they had already passed away.
In her post, the mayor stated, “Emergency teams in Mexico City acted immediately upon reports of three people fainting at different locations near Paseo de la Reforma. All medical protocols were followed. Sadly, their lives could not be saved.” She urged the public to celebrate responsibly, with caution and sensitivity.
The celebration in Mexico City erupted immediately after the match concluded. The skies lit up with fireworks around the Independence Monument as thousands of Mexican fans flooded the approximately five-kilometer-long Paseo de la Reforma, stretching from the main square, Zócalo, to Chapultepec Park, to jubilantly celebrate the victory.
