Tragic Death of Elderly Man in Open Manhole Sparks Outrage in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 2: A 60-year-old man, Aslam Sheikh, tragically lost his life after falling into an open manhole in the Sakinaka area of Mumbai on Thursday. Heavy rainfall and flooding were reported in the region at the time of the incident, which occurred while drainage grill repairs were underway. This unfortunate event has raised serious concerns about negligence.

Lawyer Pankaj Kumar Mishra has filed a complaint with the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, demanding strict action against the responsible officials and parties involved.

Mishra described Sheikh’s death as extremely unfortunate and accused the municipal authorities of Ward L of negligence that led to this tragedy.

In his complaint, he has called for action against the negligent officials, a timely investigation, the filing of an FIR related to the incident, and a detailed report. He also urged the authorities to provide adequate compensation to the victim’s family and to conduct an audit of the drainage system and safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future.

Fire Brigade officer A.B. Sonawane reported that the rescue team arrived promptly after receiving information about a person trapped in the sewer line. Due to the swift current, Sheikh was carried approximately 100 feet away to another manhole. The rescue team found him stuck near the water’s surface and successfully extricated him after a 20 to 22-minute operation using a harness. He was immediately transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.

Fire department employee Prakash Satpal confirmed that they received reports of the manhole incident. Under Sonawane’s leadership, the team acted quickly to rescue the victim and transported him to Rajawadi Hospital via a 108 ambulance, where he was pronounced dead by doctors.

Meanwhile, Sheikh’s friend Irfan alleged that the lack of adequate safety measures and barricading at the drainage repair site contributed to the accident. He has called for an FIR against the contractor, ward officials, and others responsible, as well as appropriate compensation for the deceased’s family.
