Beijing, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Chinese Academy of Sciences scholar and chief scientist of the Tianwen-3 mission, Hou Zhangqian, announced on September 29 that a comprehensive geological map of Mars will be completed by the end of 2028. This new generation map is intended to present China’s plan for dividing the geological epochs of Mars, helping to gain international recognition for the standards developed independently by China.
During a seminar on high-quality development held at the Geological Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Hou emphasized that discoveries made by the Zhurong rover will be included in this map. These findings suggest that an ancient ocean existed on Mars about 3.5 billion years ago, along with evidence of flooding that occurred approximately 1.6 billion years ago.
In addition to the geological map, a 1:50,000 scale landing area geological map and a specialized atlas will also be developed during this period. These achievements will be presented as significant outcomes of the scientific preparations for the Tianwen-3 mission. Furthermore, they will be released as the world’s first intelligent geological map of Mars, paving the way for future research models and implementation formats for creating geological maps of the Moon, Venus, and asteroids.
