New Delhi, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : India has expressed its apprehensions regarding the proposed sanctions related to Russia and Iran under the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (SRIA) to a visiting US congressional delegation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) articulated these concerns during a media briefing on Tuesday, highlighting the potential implications of the law on India-US bilateral relations and the global energy market.
During the briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that a meeting took place on Sunday between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and the congressional delegation, led by Representative Brian Mast, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The discussions covered various bilateral issues, with Misri specifically addressing India’s concerns about the SRIA law and its effects on both bilateral ties and international energy dynamics.
The MEA stated that the dialogue encompassed all aspects of India-US relations, including the recently enacted SRIA law and the future direction of these relations. The officials also exchanged views on mutual concerns such as international issues, energy security, counter-terrorism, and freedom of navigation.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Misri met with US Under Secretary of Political Affairs, Alison Hooker, in New York. They discussed energy security, civil nuclear cooperation, trust initiatives, and collaboration in the Indian Ocean region. Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other officials were also present at this meeting.
Additionally, Misri held discussions with Jacob Helberg, the US Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, where both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. They also focused on strengthening supply chains through collaboration in semiconductors and critical minerals, as noted by the MEA on the social media platform X.
