Kolkata, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The two factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have submitted their proposed names and symbols to the Election Commission. One faction is led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, while the other is headed by expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee.
Late Thursday night, the faction led by Mamata Banerjee sent three options for both the party name and symbol to the Commission. In contrast, Ritabrata Banerjee’s group submitted their choices on Friday morning.
The Election Commission had set a deadline for submitting new names and symbols by 11 a.m. on Friday. The Commission will now finalize the new names and symbols for both factions, which will be used in the upcoming by-elections for the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats on October 6. The results are expected to be announced on October 9. These seats are located in the East Midnapore and Murshidabad districts.
Although leaders from both factions confirmed the submission of their options on Friday, they refrained from revealing their chosen names and symbols. They stated that they would wait for the Election Commission’s announcement before making any comments.
On Thursday night, the Election Commission announced a freeze on the name “All India Trinamool Congress” and its flower symbol. This means that neither faction can use this name or symbol until a final decision is made by the Commission.
The Election Commission has a list of 184 free symbols, which includes various items such as air conditioners, cupboards, apples, bangles, binoculars, computers, CCTV cameras, battery torches, cakes, biscuits, bell peppers, coats, and earrings. Two symbols from this list will now be assigned to both factions of the TMC.
The TMC was established in 1998 under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership after breaking away from the Congress party. Since then, the name and symbol have been integral to the party, which came to power in West Bengal in 2011 after navigating various challenges.
