Srinagar, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Ahead of the five-day Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has made its stance clear. PDP MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi stated that the party is not focused on positions or allowances at this time. Instead, their priority is to provide relief to the people.
Mehdi emphasized, “For us, posts, allowances, and special privileges do not matter right now. What matters is how we can assist the people, resolve the reservation issue, and support the children of this region. Our primary focus is to provide relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, rather than seeking positions for ourselves.”
As the Assembly session begins on Monday, Mehdi noted that despite its brief duration, the PDP will fulfill its responsibilities as a responsible opposition. He highlighted that the government made promises to the people two years ago, including those related to reservations, the release of political detainees, and other reforms. “We will raise all these issues, especially how institutional discrimination is affecting children from the general category,” he added.
Mehdi reiterated the importance of holding the government accountable. “During these five days, we will remind the government to fulfill the promises made to the people. Our focus is not on positions but on how we can provide facilities and resolve the reservation issue. Ensuring the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is our top priority.”
He also addressed the tense situation in the Middle East, expressing hope that world leaders would come together to find a solution. “It is reassuring that the era of American bullying is coming to an end,” he remarked, adding that criticizing the U.S. is no longer seen as a crime. He called for countries to unite against the bullying tactics of Western nations.
Additionally, PDP leader Iltija Mufti recalled a protest held in December 2024, shortly after the National Conference government took office. “To prevent that protest, Omar Abdullah promised to present a committee report within six months to resolve the issue for open merit students. Two years have passed, and we have yet to see that report,” she stated, noting that recent job announcements have not included students from that category.
