New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Former Union Minister and BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan launched a strong critique against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, during a recent event in New Delhi. Pradhan claimed that Gandhi arrived in Indore with a microphone and a pre-constructed narrative of “system versus students.”
At the “Students’ Echo” program in Indore, Gandhi presented the challenges faced by students as evidence of a “captured system.” Pradhan argued that Gandhi oversimplified the complex educational ecosystem, reducing it to mere political slogans. He emphasized that the reality of student concerns is far more significant than political theatrics.
While the opposition leader is preoccupied with promoting his agenda, Pradhan highlighted that India has made strides in expanding access to higher education. The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) rose from 23.7% in 2014-15 to 30% in 2023-24. Programs like PM Vidyalakshmi now offer collateral-free education loans and interest support to eligible students, while PM Usha focuses on enhancing infrastructure and quality in state institutions. The country has also seen significant improvements in its QS World University Rankings over the past decade.
On the topic of examination reforms, Pradhan noted that the government is transitioning to computer-based testing to mitigate the shortcomings associated with paper-based exams. He acknowledged the ongoing need to uphold the integrity of assessments. The Modi government has enacted a specific law against examination malpractices, which has been strengthened with harsher penalties and fast-track courts to ensure that those who jeopardize students’ futures face severe consequences.
Pradhan asserted that student concerns should be taken seriously. However, he stressed the importance of recognizing the efforts being made to enhance opportunities, affordable education, infrastructure, and transparency. He questioned whether Rahul Gandhi would focus on solutions or continue to weaponize every student concern for political gain.
He concluded by stating that Indian students do not need a politician to tell them when to be angry. They require functional institutions, expanding opportunities, and a government that stands with them. This, he noted, is the critical distinction between politicizing students and advocating for them.
