Kathmandu, September 3: The death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal continues to rise. As of Thursday afternoon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that 1,252 people have died, while 4,216 individuals remain missing.
According to the Kathmandu Post, the highest number of fatalities has been recorded in Chitwan, where 355 bodies have been recovered. Following Chitwan, Nawalparasi East reported 218 deaths, Nawalparasi West 208, and Nuwakot 177. In Rasuwa, the origin point of this disaster, 127 fatalities have been confirmed. Bodies have also been found in Gorkha, Dhading, and Tanahun districts.
So far, only 95 victims have been identified, and their remains have been handed over to their families. The Kathmandu Post reports that rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with thousands still unaccounted for. This group includes foreign nationals, employees of hydropower projects, security personnel, and government workers.
Authorities have indicated that approximately 900 of the missing individuals are employees of hydropower projects. They noted that the number of missing persons may change as more information becomes available from affected areas and reports are verified.
To date, 11,913 individuals have been rescued. Over 21,000 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue, and relief efforts. Nearly 3,950 displaced people are currently residing in temporary relief camps in Nuwakot, Dhading, Rasuwa, and Kathmandu.
The Kathmandu Post also reported that damaged roads and bridges have cut off several villages. Relief supplies are being delivered to these areas via road and helicopter. Communication services are gradually being restored.
