Panchkula, March 21: In a significant move following a high-level meeting led by Haryana’s Forest Minister Rao Narbir Singh, three senior officials have been suspended immediately. The suspended officials include Wildlife DFO Rajendra Prasad Dangi, Territorial DFO Vishal Kaushik, and Wildlife Inspector Surjeet Singh. Previously, Forest Inspector Raghvinder Singh was also suspended and has been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Sources indicate that the decision was made during a review meeting held late Friday evening. The suspension process began with Inspector Surjeet, followed by DFO Rajendra Prasad Dangi, and finally, DFO Vishal Kaushik received their suspension letters. All suspended officials are prohibited from leaving their headquarters until the investigation is complete and must remain at the departmental headquarters.
This case pertains to the Asarewali protected forest area in Panchkula, where illegal cutting of valuable Kair (Acacia) trees has occurred. Reports suggest that hundreds to thousands of trees were cut down overnight using silent cutter machines, with the timber transported away by camels or other means. Kair wood is highly valuable, attracting the attention of illegal loggers.
The investigation is currently being conducted by the SIT, which has arrested a total of 11 individuals, including forest department officials and smugglers. Authorities have also seized timber worth millions, cash, two vehicles, and cutting tools linked to the illegal logging. Some suspects have been presented in court and sent to jail, while others are under police remand.
This action is seen as a crucial step towards environmental protection and ensuring accountability within the forest department. Following concerns about departmental oversight, the Forest Minister has directed an expedited investigation. Strict actions will be taken against those found guilty once the investigation concludes.
