The Journey of Ravindra Jain: From Waiting to Stardom

Mumbai, February 28: The life of Ravindra Jain, a legendary figure in Hindi cinema music, was a challenging journey. Initially, he composed music for various films, but his aspiration was to work with Raj Kapoor. In several interviews, he mentioned that he consistently met with Raj Kapoor, called him frequently, and shared his work regularly.

In one interview, he recounted that Raj Kapoor always told him, “When the right time comes, I will give you a chance. Just keep working.” Jain continued to work diligently while awaiting a call from Kapoor.

Years later, Raj Kapoor invited Ravindra Jain to his birthday party in Pune. During the celebration, Kapoor asked Jain to sing. As he performed “Sun Sahiba Sun,” a look of joy illuminated Kapoor’s face. With enthusiasm, he declared, “This is it. You will work on my next film, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili.'”

This moment marked a turning point in Ravindra Jain’s career. The film ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ was well-received, and its songs garnered immense love from audiences. Jain was awarded the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for his work on the film.

Ravindra Jain was born on February 28, 1944, in Aligarh. His father provided him with music education at home during his childhood. He faced rejection during auditions at five radio stations across the country. His life took a turn when Guru Radhe Shyam Jhunjhunwala offered him a chance in a film and brought him to Mumbai in 1969.

Jain recorded his first song as a music director on January 14, 1971, for Radhe Shyam Jhunjhunwala’s film ‘Lori.’ Sung by Mohammad Rafi, the song was “Ye SilSila Hai Pyaar Ka Chalta Hi Rahega.” For ‘Lori,’ Jain also had Lata Mangeshkar sing four songs and one duet with Asha Bhosle. However, Radhe Shyam could not complete the film.

The first film released under Ravindra Jain’s music direction was ‘Kanch Aur Heera’ (1972). In this film, he again collaborated with Rafi for the song “Nazar Aati Nahi Manzil.” Although the film did not perform well at the box office, Jain’s work received acclaim. He went on to achieve popularity with films like ‘Saudagar,’ ‘Chor Machaye Shor,’ ‘Chit Chor,’ ‘Tapsya,’ ‘Hum Nahi Sudhrenge,’ ‘Khoon Kharaba,’ ‘Pratishodh,’ ‘Ye Kaisa Insaaf,’ ‘Kahani Phoolwati Ki,’ ‘Mujhe Kasam Hai,’ ‘Mati Balidan Ki,’ and ‘Gulami Ki Zanjeer.’
