Pyongyang, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : North Korea is set to send a deputy minister to the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 22-26, with a speech planned for September 28. The representative, likely Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Son-gyong, will address the assembly on its final day.
According to an updated speakers’ list from the UN Secretariat, Kim is expected to represent the country at the UN headquarters. This follows his leadership of the North Korean delegation last year, marking the first time in seven years that a senior official attended the assembly.
Since the failed Hanoi summit between former U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in 2019, Pyongyang has not sent any high-level officials to the General Assembly. Instead, the North Korean ambassador to the UN, Kim Song, delivered speeches during that period.
This year’s assembly will attract attention as speculation grows about the messages North Korea may convey. Notably, Trump has expressed a desire to meet with Kim Jong-un again this year.
The UN General Assembly serves as one of the six main organs of the United Nations, facilitating major discussions, policy-making, and representation. Currently, it is in its 80th session, with its authority and procedures outlined in Chapter IV of the UN Charter.
