Ujjain, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain held its spectacular Bhasma Aarti on September 5, coinciding with the ninth day of the Bhadrapada month. A significant number of devotees gathered to witness this divine event.
Early on Saturday, after receiving blessings from Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and cymbals. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and sacred mantras.
Upon the opening of the temple gates, devotees performed a ceremonial water offering, using a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices known as Panchamrit. The rituals included the ringing of the first bell, followed by the offering of water. After the Kapoor Aarti, Baba Mahakal was adorned with a crown. The Bhasma Aarti then commenced, accompanied by the sounds of traditional instruments like the jhanjhar and dhol, along with conch shell blowing. Baba Mahakal was beautifully decorated with sandalwood paste, cannabis, and jewelry.
The chief priest conducted the Maha Aarti, allowing many devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti. Devotees lined up since the previous night to obtain a glimpse of their revered deity. Traditionally, men are required to wear dhoti and women to wear sarees during this sacred ceremony.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is presented to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal reveals himself in a tangible form. This event attracts a large number of devotees to the holy city of Ujjain.
