Kathmandu, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Indian rescue teams are collaborating with Nepalese authorities in Kathmandu to conduct search and relief operations in areas devastated by recent floods. The specialized tunnel rescue unit is ramping up efforts to clear blocked sections and locate individuals still trapped inside the Chilime Tunnel.
On Friday, the Indian tunnel rescue team initiated operations within the Chilime Tunnel, constructing a temporary track to facilitate the movement of heavy equipment toward the affected areas. The Chilime Hydropower Project site, located near Syabrubesi village in the Rasua district, was severely impacted by the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal on August 26.
The rescue teams have established a foothold inside the tunnel and are working to reach flooded and obstructed sections. Safety ropes have been installed, and temporary floats and pumps are being deployed to assist in extracting personnel from areas hindered by water and debris.
The ongoing operation aims to make the affected regions safer and more accessible, allowing for the swift arrival of additional equipment and expediting the search efforts. Alongside the rescue teams, a highly trained medical unit from India, comprising doctors and paramedics, is actively providing medical aid, emergency treatment, and humanitarian assistance to local residents displaced or affected by the floods.
Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, shared updates on social media, stating, “The Indian tunnel rescue team, working alongside the Nepalese army, has excavated deeper into the Chilime Tunnel to remove water. A temporary route is also being created to facilitate the arrival of heavier equipment, and the team’s doctors have set up a health camp for the local community.”
Indian teams are working diligently with Nepalese officials to provide immediate assistance to affected communities and locate individuals who went missing after the sudden floods. To date, India has dispatched significant relief supplies to Nepal and successfully rescued 166 Indian citizens. The relief materials include essential medical and humanitarian supplies such as antibiotics, pain relievers, surgical equipment, tarps, sleeping bags, blankets, and water purification tablets.
