Los Angeles, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Hurricane Lowell is rapidly intensifying, now located several hundred miles south of the Hawaiian Islands. In response, Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency to prepare for the storm’s potential impacts.
According to updates from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Lowell has strengthened to a Category 4 storm, with winds reaching approximately 240 kilometers per hour and a central pressure of 926 millibars. As of Friday morning local time, it was situated about 985 kilometers south of Hawaii.
The National Weather Service (NWS) indicated that Lowell briefly reached Category 5 status on Wednesday and is expected to strengthen further by Friday afternoon.
Current forecasts suggest that Lowell will approach the western Hawaiian Islands late Monday into Monday night, maintaining its powerful storm status. The NWS warns that high waves and heavy rainfall could extend hundreds of miles from the storm’s center.
As reported by Xinhua, Governor Green signed the emergency declaration on Thursday to encompass the entire state. This move aims to assist in preparations for Hurricane Lowell, along with Tropical Storm Karina and any other storms that may affect Hawaii.
The declaration will enable state and county agencies to mobilize personnel, equipment, and resources swiftly, especially as Hawaii continues recovery efforts from Tropical Cyclone Lala. Governor Green emphasized, “This declaration allows our agencies and counties to quickly deploy people, equipment, and resources to ensure safety across every island. We urge everyone to stay prepared and monitor official weather updates.”
