Ghatkopar West, Mumbai, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : A dispute has emerged in Ghatkopar West, Mumbai, regarding the construction of a stage for the Dahi-Handi festival in the middle of the road. The Ghatkopar police have urged the municipal corporation to take immediate action against this structure.
In a letter addressed to the assistant commissioner of the N-ward, the senior inspector of Ghatkopar police expressed concerns about the stage being erected for the Dahi-Handi event organized by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 9, at the Amrut Nagar Circle.
While the municipal corporation had previously granted a ‘no objection’ for the event, it was contingent upon ensuring that pedestrian and vehicular movement would not be obstructed. However, during an inspection on September 3, police officers discovered that a stage was being constructed directly in the road in front of the Sagar Park building. They raised alarms that this could completely block the proposed 90-foot-wide road leading to the building, which would hinder emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks from accessing the area.
The police also noted that prior approvals from the ward officer and fire department in Vikroli were not obtained before erecting the stage. It appeared that no site inspection had been conducted before the structure’s construction.
To emphasize the seriousness of the situation, the police referenced a previous incident from September 2, 2025, when a fire broke out at a shop in Indira Nagar. At that time, emergency vehicles struggled to reach the scene due to vendors and illegal parking blocking the road in front of Sagar Park.
As a result, the Ghatkopar police have called on the municipal corporation to take appropriate action to ensure that the arrangements for the upcoming festival do not disrupt traffic and do not impede access for emergency services.
