Budgam, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : A terrorist was killed in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir during the ongoing operation named “Ashdar” on Friday. The search operation is still underway in the area.
The army reported that the operation resumed early Friday morning in the Ashdar Gali area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, following its initiation on Thursday evening. The operation began after gunfire was heard during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the region, leading to an encounter between the army’s patrol team and the terrorists.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, the army’s Chinar Corps based in Badami Bagh stated, “Operation Ashdar, Budgam. Based on specific intelligence, the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF from Srinagar launched a joint search operation in Ashdar Gali.”
Alert soldiers observed suspicious activity, and when challenged, the terrorists opened fire, resulting in intense gunfire. During this exchange, one terrorist was neutralized, and an AK rifle along with other war-related materials was recovered.
The army has a history of significant anti-terror operations in Budgam. In 1995, a major operation took place in the town of Charar-e-Sharif, home to the revered Sufi shrine of Sheikh Nooruddin Wali. At that time, Pakistani terrorist commander Mast Gul had infiltrated the town and surrounded the shrine. The army cordoned off the area, blocking all exit routes for the terrorists to protect civilians and prevent damage to the shrine.
The standoff lasted for 66 days, culminating in Mast Gul setting fire to the shrine, which also damaged nearby homes. While the army, police, paramilitary forces, and local administration initiated rescue efforts, Mast Gul managed to escape to Pakistan after destroying one of Kashmir’s most sacred Sufi shrines. The operation resulted in the deaths of twenty terrorists and four civilians, while two soldiers from the army were also killed.
