Transformation in Sukmas Gogunda: Basic Amenities Reshape Lives Amid Ongoing Security Challenges

Sukma, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : In Sukma, a district in Chhattisgarh once notorious for Naxalite activities, the Gogunda region is witnessing a significant transformation. Once accessible only by helicopter due to security concerns, the area is now benefiting from essential services such as roads, electricity, schools, and anganwadis, which are improving residents’ lives. However, security challenges are far from resolved.

Gogunda was previously synonymous with Naxalite terror. The presence of IEDs and Naxalite hideouts made everyday life extremely difficult for locals. Basic amenities like roads and electricity were lacking, and schools and anganwadis were merely distant dreams. Security forces often relied on helicopters to reach the area.

The turning point came with the establishment of a camp by the 74th Battalion of the CRPF. Following the camp’s setup, road construction began, and electricity was brought to the region. Schools and anganwadis started to emerge, gradually alleviating the fear of Naxalites among the villagers.

Yet, challenges remain in Gogunda. Access to the camp is still not possible by vehicle, and even motorcycles cannot reach it. Both security personnel and locals must trek uphill to reach the camp. The geographical conditions and the threat of IEDs continue to pose significant challenges for security forces.

A media team recently covered security operations and ongoing changes in the area. CRPF personnel boosted the morale of the team, expressing gratitude for their presence. According to the soldiers, the threat is not completely eliminated, with reports of IED discoveries surfacing weekly. Police and Naxalite sources indicate that numerous IEDs may still be buried in the ground across the region.

A senior CRPF officer remarked that in 2014, the condition of roads, schools, and hospitals in the area was dire. Thanks to the efforts of security forces and joint teams, development is now accelerating. Local residents are also stepping forward to assist and collaborate with security forces.

The arrival of a camp, roads, electricity, and schools in Gogunda signals that sustainable change in Naxal-affected areas can only be achieved by advancing development alongside security.
