Kathmandu, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : The recent catastrophic floods in Nepal have claimed over 1,300 lives, with the toll continuing to rise as recovery efforts progress. Authorities report that, as of Saturday morning, a total of 1,344 bodies have been recovered from various districts.
The situation remains dire, with 4,886 individuals, including 606 foreigners, still unaccounted for. The floods have wreaked havoc, particularly along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors in central Nepal, causing substantial loss of life and property.
Many of the missing are believed to be trapped in tunnels associated with 11 hydropower projects located along these river corridors. Rescue operations are actively underway to locate these individuals.
On Friday, two people were rescued alive from the tunnel of the 60 MW Upper Trishuli 3A project in Rasuwa district. The Nepalese government has committed to continuing search efforts, which include retrieving and identifying bodies as well as providing relief to affected areas.
Security agencies have ramped up their search and rescue operations in the flood-stricken regions. So far, 8,962 individuals have been rescued, including 1,552 foreigners.
Efforts to identify the recovered bodies are also being expedited. According to police reports, DNA samples have been collected from 1,260 deceased individuals and 1,012 relatives, totaling 2,272 samples.
The Nepal Police have deployed 7,912 personnel for search, rescue, and relief operations. Tragically, 65 police officers have lost their lives in this disaster, while 25 remain missing.
The floods have severely damaged infrastructure and private property around the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Once rescue and relief operations are completed, Nepal is seeking international assistance for reconstruction efforts.
