Telangana Governments Mission to Transform Hyderabad into an Eco-Friendly City

Mumbai, June 18: Telangana Chief Minister Revant Reddy announced on Thursday that his government is on a mission to transform Hyderabad into an eco-friendly city.

Speaking at the ‘Van Mahotsav’ event held near Gurramguda Eco Park, the Chief Minister emphasized ongoing efforts to restore stormwater drains, legally reclaim forest land from encroachment, and enhance the city’s greenery and environmental sustainability.

In a post on the social media platform X, he stated that the evening event holds special significance. He noted that it is not merely a symbolic tree-planting initiative but a commitment to address past environmental damages and disasters like flooding, which the government is pursuing with full dedication.

Reddy pointed out that illegal encroachments on lakes and forest lands had previously led to chaos in Hyderabad even during light rains. However, the current administration is focused on revitalizing stormwater drains, reclaiming forest land through legal means, and making the city lush and green.

The Chief Minister described the Van Mahotsav at Gurramguda’s forest land as a practical expression of the vision that arose during his visit to the area as an MP during the 2021 floods. He also shared photographs from that visit.

He reiterated that this event showcases his government’s legal battles against encroachers, efforts to protect forest land, and the ambition to create a city harmoniously integrated with nature.

Notably, in December 2025, the Supreme Court declared 102 acres of land in Gurramguda as forest land. The apex court accepted the Telangana government’s appeal in the Saheb Nagar Kala (Gurramguda Reserve Forest) case, overturning previous orders and resolving a long-standing dispute.

Subsequently, in March 2026, the state government reserved 424 acres and 31 guntas of Gurramguda land as a protected forest under Section 15 of the Telangana Forest Act, 1967, deciding to develop it into a large urban forest park.

On Thursday evening, the Chief Minister will inaugurate the Van Mahotsav by planting trees in the park. He will also launch development projects worth ₹17.84 crore undertaken in the Gurramguda Reserve Forest.

Additionally, the Chief Minister will virtually inaugurate urban parks, eco-parks, wildlife conservation projects, zoo modernization, residential buildings, and environmental infrastructure projects across the state, amounting to approximately ₹17.66 crore. These initiatives have been developed in various districts, including Nizamabad, Kothagudem, Hanamkonda, Medak, Mahbubnagar, Mulugu, Narayanpet, Bhupalpally, Sangareddy, Ranga Reddy, and Warangal.
