Coimbatore, June 23: Coconut farmers in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts are grappling with rising production costs due to a significant labor shortage. This shortage has led to a sharp increase in the costs associated with husking and harvesting coconuts.
In the past two months, the cost of husking coconuts has surged from ₹1 to ₹1.50 per coconut, marking a 50% increase. Farmers attribute this rise to a severe shortage of laborers engaged in coconut-related agricultural tasks. Many migrant workers, who returned home during the election period, have not returned, exacerbating the labor deficit.
Farmers believe that some of these workers may have found other job opportunities or settled elsewhere, reducing the availability of labor for agricultural work.
The rising husking costs have placed an additional financial burden on farmers, who are already struggling with market fluctuations and increasing agricultural expenses. Small and marginal farmers are the most affected, as they rely heavily on labor and have limited bargaining power.
Industry experts suggest that the increased labor costs could impact coconut prices in the market, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers.
While traders purchasing coconuts in bulk can easily find labor, individual farmers and small producers often have to pay more to secure workers.
The cost of harvesting coconuts has also risen due to the labor shortage. Recently, the expense of climbing coconut trees and harvesting has increased from ₹2.25 to ₹3 per coconut. The number of skilled workers adept at climbing trees is dwindling, as older workers retire and the younger generation shows little interest in this physically demanding work.
Experts note that mechanical solutions exist for some agricultural tasks like harvesting and husking coconuts. However, the high investment costs and practical challenges have limited their adoption among small farmers.
In plantations with tall coconut trees, harvesting equipment is also less effective.
The labor shortage is felt beyond the fields. Coconut husks are a crucial raw material for the coir and coir pith industries, which rely on a steady supply from producers and traders. Any disruption in husk availability or an increase in processing costs could impact production in these sectors, affecting the livelihoods of rural communities dependent on coconut farming and related industries.
With no significant signs of improvement in labor availability, farmers fear that production costs may continue to rise in the coming months, potentially diminishing profits in one of Tamil Nadu‘s key agricultural sectors.
