Washington, June 23: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that any relief from sanctions on Iran will be tied to the purchase of American agricultural products. He emphasized that ongoing negotiations between the two nations will ensure Tehran is never permitted to develop nuclear weapons.
After signing an executive order on quantum technology, Trump provided insights into the discussions with Iran. He described the talks as productive and noted that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has returned to normal levels.
“Our strait is open, and we have a country that will never have nuclear weapons,” Trump stated.
A U.S. delegation led by Vice President J.D. Vance is currently in Switzerland negotiating with Iranian officials. The discussions focus on the future of Iran’s nuclear program, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and methods to resolve regional disputes.
Trump indicated that the government is considering easing sanctions. He suggested that any unfrozen funds could be used to purchase food products from the U.S.
“One thing we are doing, which came to light last night, is that any unfrozen money will be used to buy food. And food will only be purchased from our farmers in America. Corn, soybeans, everything they need will be bought from our farmers,” he explained.
When asked if lifting sanctions would allow Iran to rebuild its military capabilities, Trump clarified that the funds would be allocated for humanitarian purposes. “They should use the money to buy food for their people, as they are very hungry right now,” he added.
The President expressed confidence that negotiations are progressing in the right direction. “We are doing very well in negotiating a fair and reasonable deal,” he remarked.
While declining to discuss specific enforcement mechanisms, Trump warned that the U.S. would respond if Iran fails to comply with any agreement. “I will do what I have to do,” he asserted.
Trump dismissed claims that Tehran has gained an advantage in the negotiations. He reiterated that recent military operations have significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities. “Their navy and air force are gone. All their leaders are dead. Their economy is devastated,” he claimed.
Praising Vice President Vance’s role in the negotiations, Trump stated, “I think they are doing a great job. I watched their news conference from Switzerland. He is a very smart man and has done very well.”
The President also noted a significant increase in energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz following recent tensions. “Yesterday, we took more oil from the strait than ever before. The strait is completely open,” he concluded.
