Irans President Emphasizes Commitment in US Peace Talks

Tehran, June 23: Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian stated that the success of peace talks with the United States hinges on the “faithful fulfillment of agreed responsibilities.” Iran has consistently advocated for a “commitment for commitment” principle in the ongoing Bergenstock talks.

Pejeshkian highlighted the importance of obligations and responsibilities in a post on the social media platform X. He wrote, “The success of negotiations depends on the faithful adherence to the agreed obligations. Full commitment must be demonstrated.”

He further noted, “Progress in this direction will be assessed based on the practical compliance with the accepted responsibilities. Statements made outside the agreed text do not aid in advancing the talks.”

However, he did not clarify which statements he was referring to. In the past 48 hours, former President Donald Trump has made several comments that Iranian officials have denied, including claims that Iran agreed to allow nuclear inspections and that any funds released to Iran would be used to purchase American agricultural products.

Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf characterized the negotiations as part of a broader struggle. Returning from Switzerland, he responded to journalists’ questions on the plane, stating, “Success on the battlefield does not translate into a lasting political and legal achievement unless it is advanced through diplomacy.”

Ghalibaf remarked, “Negotiation is also a form of combat and a means to advance the struggle. Iran views dialogue not as a weakness but as a strategy adopted to protect its interests.”

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Ghalibaf asserted that the situation in the strait will not revert to its pre-war state. Iran will manage this crucial maritime route in its own way, while still adhering to international regulations.

After the first round of technical talks with the US in Switzerland, Ghalibaf reiterated that Iran does not trust the United States. He stated, “We have never trusted the Americans, do not trust them today, and it would be wise to remain cautious in the future.”
