TMC Rebel Legislators Lack Significance: Sougata Roy

Kolkata, June 23: Sougata Roy, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), addressed the recent meeting of rebel legislators, the turmoil within the party, a letter sent to the Election Commission, and comments on Mamata Banerjee.

The rebel faction of the TMC has removed Mamata Banerjee from her position as party chairperson and appointed Arup Roy, the legislator from Howrah Central, as the new chairperson. Additionally, Abhishek Banerjee has been suspended from his role as party general secretary.

In an interview, Sougata Roy stated, “A meeting took place at the Novotel Hotel in New Town, indicating that this splinter group is moving in a specific direction. Someone must have funded such a large gathering at the hotel. This entire situation resembles a joke and a circus. Mamata Banerjee founded the TMC and fought hard to establish the party. Those who have formed this committee after leaving her have no significance. They have created a committee with the BJP and CIM.”

Regarding the letter sent to the Election Commission, Roy mentioned, “The Election Commission of India determines the party’s election symbol under the Allocation and Reservation Order of 1968. We will present our case to the Commission. If summoned, we will respond there. The key point is that nearly 90 percent of TMC workers stand with Mamata Banerjee. The rebel legislators forming a committee will not find success in any assembly.”

He further added, “The opposing legislators fought elections with TMC funds. This raises questions about how they will manage their faction now. I believe the opposition will receive funding from the BJP to run the party and committee.”

On the BJP government’s budget, Sougata Roy commented, “The announcement of 33 percent reservation for women in 100,000 jobs is commendable if implemented. However, the BJP has overlooked the 30 percent budget cut for minorities.”
