Ashish Vidyarthi: From Villain to Social Media Star

Mumbai, June 18: Ashish Vidyarthi, renowned for his powerful villain roles in Indian cinema, is now making waves on social media. Born on June 19, 1962, in Thalassery, Kerala, he often emphasizes in his podcast “Fifty Plus Zindagi” that age is just a number and does not limit creativity.

Ashish inherited his intellectual depth from his parents. His father, Govind Vidyarthi (T.K. Govindan), was a freedom fighter and communist activist. He adopted the surname ‘Vidyarthi’ in honor of the secular martyr Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi. Later, he made significant contributions to preserving dying folk arts at the Sangeet Natak Akademi. His mother, Reba Vidyarthi, was a distinguished Kathak instructor. This rich cultural environment instilled a deep respect for art and society in Ashish.

After studying history at Hindu College, Ashish attended the National School of Drama (NSD). He then joined the theater group ‘Act One’ with Manoj Bajpayee and N.K. Sharma. This theater experience helped him hone his acting skills and powerful voice.

The 1994 film “Drohkaal,” directed by Govind Nihalani, marked a turning point in his career. For his role as Commander Bhadra, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1995. However, he faced financial struggles in Mumbai at that time. He later solidified his reputation as a villain in Bollywood with roles in “Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin” (1996) and “Vaastav” (1999).

In the early 2000s, Ashish turned to South Indian cinema. His portrayal of the corrupt police officer DSP Shankar in the Tamil film “Dil” (2001) and the strict father Shivsubramaniam in the blockbuster “Ghilli” (2004) made him an overnight sensation in the South. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Villain for the Telugu film “Athaanokkade” (2005). His performances in the Kannada film “AK-47” (1999) and the Bengali film “Bombaiyer Bombete” (2003) showcased that language is no barrier to art.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he launched his YouTube channel “Ashish Vidyarthi Actor Vlogs” in November 2021. On this platform, he shares videos related to travel, local cuisines, stories of everyday people, and life experiences. He also ventured into informal storytelling with “Kahaanibaaz” and stand-up comedy through “Sit Down with Ashish,” establishing a unique identity among audiences.

In the film “Kill” (2023), he portrayed a heartfelt father and villain, Benny, who leads train robbers. His cameo as a college director in “Aavesham” (2024) was also well-received. In June 2025, he appeared on Karan Johar’s reality show “The Traitors India,” where his ideological clashes and subsequent reconciliations with young influencers garnered significant attention.

After amicably separating from his first wife, Rajoshi Barua, in 2022, Ashish married Rupali Barua on May 25, 2023. This decision faced criticism and trolling on social media.
