Hyderabad, April 14: The Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has responded to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s recent statement, where he called for unity among southern states against delimitation. Telangana BJP President N. Ramchandra Rao reposted Reddy’s letter on the social media platform X, urging him to stop spreading fear regarding the delimitation process.
In his post, Rao emphasized, “Stop spreading fear—read Article 81 of the Constitution.” He pointed out that the phrase “as far as possible” in Article 81 implies that delimitation is not solely based on population but also allows for other relevant factors that the Delimitation Commission may consider.
He stated that the increase in the number of seats is left to the Delimitation Commission, yet accused Reddy of playing politics unnecessarily, calling it shameful.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy urged his counterparts from other southern states and the Union Territory of Puducherry to collectively oppose the central government’s efforts to implement a “proportional representation model” for Lok Sabha seats. He argued that this move would be extremely detrimental to the interests of southern states.
Reddy expressed his deep concerns in separate letters to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy regarding the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats based on the proportional representation method. He warned of the long-term implications for both southern states and the federal balance of the country.
The Telangana Chief Minister stressed the growing need for collective participation among southern states and like-minded regions to effectively voice their concerns at the national level.
He clarified that women’s reservation, national delimitation, and the increase in Lok Sabha seats are three distinct issues that are being deliberately conflated to confuse the public.
Reddy noted that those supporting the women’s reservation bill (without linking it to an increase in seats) or delimitation are merely seeking to alter the boundaries of assembly constituencies within states.
He asserted that the real contentious issue is the proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats to 850 on a proportional basis. “We will completely oppose this method of seat increase, and we must,” he stated, explaining the underlying mathematics of the proportional model and the resulting shifts in political power among states.
