Chennai, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : The Special Task Force established in Tamil Nadu to enhance the safety of women and children has completed its first 100 days of operation. On September 20, 2026, Minister for Social Welfare and Women’s Rights, Jagathishwari, reported that the task force acted on 4,231 complaints received from across the state during this period.
This initiative was launched with the aim of ensuring swift and effective institutional action against crimes targeting women and children, following the rise of the TVK government. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the task force on June 9, 2026, in Chennai.
During its initial 100 days, the task force implemented various campaigns focusing on crime prevention, rapid response to complaints, monitoring sensitive areas, and providing immediate assistance to those in need. Notably, the team successfully located and rescued 58 missing women and 94 children. Additionally, they ensured safe transport for 111 individuals requiring immediate care and protection, collaborating closely with police, district administration, and social welfare agencies to deliver necessary support.
Child marriage prevention emerged as a key priority for the task force. In its first 100 days, the team successfully halted 54 child marriages, offering counseling and essential assistance to minors at risk of illegal marriages.
Jagathishwari highlighted the effectiveness of the 24/7 Singapennu Helpline (1091), which has been integrated with emergency service 112. This connection has reduced response times for complaints and ensured that cases are promptly directed to the relevant agencies.
The minister noted that this system has improved coordination among police, the social welfare department, child protection units, and other related agencies. Cases involving threats to life are prioritized, while other issues receive counseling, shelter, and legal assistance.
The government is working on enhancing monitoring in sensitive areas, increasing public awareness of the helpline, and strengthening coordination among departments related to the safety of women and children. Jagathishwari described the task force’s initial performance as encouraging, reflecting the TVK government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for women and children.
