New Delhi, March 18: Former councillor Tahir Hussain, accused in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, has filed a petition for interim bail in Karkardooma Court. He has requested relief based on his health condition.
Hussain is seeking interim bail for one month starting March 20, citing the need for surgery. While hearing the petition, the Karkardooma Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police, demanding a response. The court also requested a detailed report from the jail administration regarding Hussain’s current health status. A hearing on the matter is expected soon.
It is important to note that Hussain’s regular bail application had previously been rejected by the court. The court stated that the charges against him are serious and, due to the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), bail is not applicable. Hussain faces charges of conspiracy to incite riots, violence, and other serious offenses. Cases have been registered against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the UAPA.
The riots in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in the deaths of 53 people and left hundreds injured. This violence erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Investigative agencies have termed it a premeditated conspiracy, with several individuals implicated. Hussain is considered one of the main conspirators.
The court has adopted a strict stance in this case, having rejected his regular bail application again in January 2026. The new request for interim relief on medical grounds will be decided after reviewing the police report and health assessment.
