Swanand Kirkire and Sudhir Mishra Reunite for Summer of 77 to Bring Emergency Era to Life Through Music

Mumbai, May 5: Renowned writer, lyricist, and composer Swanand Kirkire is collaborating once again with acclaimed filmmaker Sudhir Mishra in the upcoming political drama series ‘Summer of 77’. In this project, Kirkire shared his unique experiences working alongside Mishra.

Kirkire described his collaboration with Mishra as particularly special. He stated, “Sudhir Mishra presents stories with honesty and depth, which gives him a distinct identity. Working with such a director is always a learning experience, as he understands every aspect with sensitivity and translates that onto the screen.”

Previously, Swanand and Sudhir have teamed up on several memorable projects. Notable examples include the popular song “Bawra Man” from ‘Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi’ and the film ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’.

Kirkire mentioned, “‘Summer of 77’ is my and Sudhir Mishra’s fifth project together. One of Sudhir’s strengths is that he gives music ample space in his films. In today’s times, where music often becomes a mere formality, Sudhir makes it an essential part of the narrative. When a director trusts music, it inspires a composer to create something new.”

The storyline of ‘Summer of 77’ is based on the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. The series consists of eight episodes that will showcase the thoughts, rebellions, dreams, and identity searches of the youth during that era.

Kirkire added, “After my last film ‘Bandwale’, I was looking for a project where music would be integral to the story. ‘Summer of 77’ provided that opportunity. Creating music for such a narrative is not easy, as it is essential to capture the spirit of that time. This series tells a story from an era where music, poetry, and expression played a significant role in giving voice to the people. For this series, I have composed a total of six songs, three of which I have sung myself.”
