Ballia, June 6: The Jay Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, also known as Surha Tal, in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh has received international recognition as a Ramsar site. This achievement has been hailed by the state’s Transport Minister, Dayashankar Singh, as a moment of pride for the entire Ballia region, commending the efforts made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Minister Dayashankar Singh stated that this decision is not just an environmental milestone, but a significant step towards placing Ballia on the global tourism map. Surha Tal will no longer be just a local attraction; it is set to become a focal point for tourists from around the world. The historical significance of Surha Tal is profound. According to ancient beliefs, King Surath and the seven sages had their ashram in this area. It is said that King Surath constructed this lake to cure himself of leprosy.
Singh explained that Surha Tal is naturally connected to the Ganges River. During floods, when the Ganges’ water level rises, it flows into Surha Tal, and during the monsoon, the lake fills up and its water returns to the Ganges. This lake spans approximately 3,400 hectares and is considered one of Asia’s largest wetlands. Each year, numerous migratory birds visit from various countries, including distant regions like Siberia and Australia. This biodiversity adds to the region’s uniqueness.
The minister noted that this area had already been designated as the Jay Prakash Narayan National Bird Sanctuary, but the recent Ramsar site recognition has further strengthened its identity. This dream was envisioned by previous leaders, but it has now become a reality under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This decision will not only elevate Ballia’s name on the global stage but also significantly boost tourism in the area.
He emphasized that as tourists flock to this region, new job opportunities will arise for local residents. Sectors such as hotels, transportation, guiding services, and small businesses will directly benefit. The government is continuously working to preserve the migratory birds and natural beauty of Surha Tal. This will not only promote environmental conservation but also accelerate regional development.
Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi, he stated that this decision is historic for all of Ballia and that in the coming years, this area will be among Uttar Pradesh’s premier tourist destinations.
