Ahmedabad, April 24: The dream of a metro system in Surat, Gujarat, is now a reality. Following Ahmedabad, the diamond city has initiated trial runs for an 8.5-kilometer route between Dream City and Althan Tenament.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government is rapidly expanding the metro network, prioritizing modern infrastructure and urban transport. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited has marked a significant achievement by commencing trial runs on this route. The introduction of metro services is set to alleviate traffic congestion and provide residents with a faster, safer, and eco-friendly travel option.
Additionally, the metro will offer direct connectivity to the Surat Diamond Bourse, boosting the diamond industry. It is expected to facilitate smooth transportation for 40,000 to 45,000 artisans and traders daily from areas like Varachha, Katargam, and Sarathana.
Jayanti Savaliya, Regional Chairman of the Gujarat Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council, stated that the metro’s launch will significantly reduce traffic issues, allowing 45,000 people to commute to the diamond bourse efficiently. The metro network is well-designed to connect the entire city.
The Surat Metro Rail Project includes two corridors: Corridor-1, connecting Sarathana to Dream City, and Corridor-2, linking Bhesan to Saroli. A total of 38 stations are being constructed along the 40.35-kilometer route, which features 6.47 kilometers of underground sections. Two depots are also being developed at Dream City and Bhesan.
During the 500-hour trial run between Dream City and Althan Tenament, the metro train’s speed, braking system, and technical aspects are undergoing thorough evaluation. The construction of seven metro stations on this route is in its final stages. Following safety inspections and testing, the Surat Metro service is expected to be inaugurated for public use soon.
Anand Singh Bisht, Project Director of the Surat Metro Rail Project, explained that Corridor-1, also known as the ‘Diamond Corridor,’ spans 21.6 kilometers, with 15 kilometers elevated and 6.5 kilometers underground. It includes 14 elevated and 6 underground stations. Corridor-2, referred to as the ‘Textile Corridor,’ connects Bhesan to Saroli and is entirely elevated, featuring 18 elevated stations over a length of 18.7 kilometers.
Local resident Raj Patel expressed his excitement, stating that the metro will greatly simplify daily commutes for those relying on public transport. After years of waiting, the arrival of the metro brings joy to every Surat resident.
Another local, Roshan Chimna, noted the rapid progress of the project, highlighting the pride it brings to the community.
