New Chandigarh, June 8: India is in a commanding position in the only Test match against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. After declaring their innings at 564 runs for 8 wickets, India has put on a strong bowling performance, dismissing 5 Afghan batsmen for just 113 runs by the end of the second day.
Making his Test debut, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has excelled with the ball, taking 3 wickets. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised Suthar’s performance.
Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Gavaskar stated, “Manav Suthar has certainly made a fantastic start to his Test career. His confidence was impressive not only in bowling but also during batting, especially in how he used his feet and appeared comfortable at the crease.”
He added, “Suthar was very accurate in his bowling and consistently applied pressure on the batsmen. The pitch offered him some assistance, which he capitalized on well. However, the true test for any spinner comes on flat pitches where more variation and adaptability are required.”
Gavaskar believes that Suthar has sparked considerable expectations and could become a strong option in the longer format of the game.
“This is a very encouraging debut, and he has shown the qualities to become a strong contender at the Test level going forward,” Gavaskar remarked.
During his batting stint, Suthar scored 28 runs off 41 balls. In bowling, he delivered 15.5 overs, including 7 maidens, conceding just 21 runs while taking 3 wickets, dismissing Abdul Malik, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Afsar Jazi.
