Galle, August 16: The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka is underway at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Devdutt Padikkal delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a remarkable 167 runs. This innings has also secured a special achievement for Padikkal.
Batting at number three for India, Padikkal became the third player to score 150 or more runs in a Test match against Sri Lanka. Before him, only Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara had reached this milestone. Dravid scored a powerful 177 runs in a Test match against Sri Lanka in 2009, while Pujara made 153 runs in 2017.
On the second day of the Test, Padikkal continued his impressive batting, reaching his 150 runs off 215 balls. He faced a total of 230 balls to compile his 167 runs, hitting 15 fours and one six. Padikkal formed a partnership of 71 runs with Rishabh Pant off 113 balls. He then carried on the innings with KL Rahul, who had to retire hurt and return to the dressing room.
Pant failed to capitalize on a good start, scoring 39 runs off 62 balls before getting out due to a poor shot. Rahul could not complete his century, returning to the pavilion with 82 runs off 175 balls. On the first day of the Test, captain Shubman Gill managed only 16 runs, while Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 32 runs but could not make the most of his good start. The first session of the second day was washed out due to rain, which also delayed the start of the second session, allowing Sri Lankan bowlers to take advantage of the damp pitch.
