BCCIs Controversial Selection of Unfit Players for Afghanistan Series

New Delhi, September 2: The three-match T20 series between India and Afghanistan is set to take place at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium on September 13, 15, and 17. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian team on Tuesday, led by captain Shreyas Iyer.

The 15-member squad includes four players who are currently unfit. These players are all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, and Harshit Rana. They will only be able to participate if they regain fitness. This raises the question: why did the selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, choose unfit players for the Afghanistan series despite having alternatives? Even when fit, players require time to regain their rhythm, or they risk further injury.

Looking at the careers of Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana, all have been significantly affected by injuries. Therefore, the board should have granted them ample time to recover, minimizing the chances of re-injury upon their return.

There are several players in India who performed exceptionally well in the 2026 IPL and possess international experience. They could have been given a chance. The BCCI could have replaced Jasprit Bumrah with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Washington Sundar with Krunal Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy with Mohammed Siraj or Mayank Yadav, and Harshit Rana with Prince Yadav. The inclusion of Siraj, Mayank, and Bhuvneshwar would have strengthened the team’s pace attack, which is crucial for the Afghanistan series. The BCCI had a golden opportunity to provide these players with a chance, but by opting for unfit players, it has shown a lack of seriousness regarding their fitness.

The Indian team for the Afghanistan series includes: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav SuryaVanshi, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy*, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar*, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah*, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana*.

The presence of star unfit players raises concerns.
