Strong Earthquake Tremors Felt in Kolkata, Residents Panic

Kolkata, February 27: Tremors were felt across Kolkata and several regions of West Bengal following a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Bangladesh. The quake struck at approximately 1:22 PM, sending shockwaves throughout the city.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in Bangladesh, leading to strong tremors in Kolkata and surrounding districts.

Initial reports indicate that the shaking lasted for several seconds, causing panic among residents. Many people evacuated offices and buildings as a precaution. The earthquake’s intensity in Kolkata was measured at 5.0, with its epicenter located about 8 kilometers from the city.

A notable incident occurred during a public meeting where Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar was speaking. He also felt the tremors and was seen inquiring about the situation afterward. The cameras at the event shook as the earthquake struck.

The districts most affected by the tremors included South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore.

A young woman from Howrah described the experience, stating that the strong tremors lasted for a few seconds, and it was only later that they learned an earthquake had occurred. She expressed that such events can be frightening for everyone.

Earlier, on February 3, a significant area of Kolkata experienced shaking after a quake that lasted around 15 seconds. Initially, it was reported that the source of that earthquake was Myanmar.
