Chicago, June 19: Former U.S. President Barack Obama participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. During the event, he criticized former President Donald Trump without mentioning his name.
The U.S. Presidential Center is a complex dedicated to the legacy of a former president. It typically includes a museum, study space, public programs, and an archive of presidential records. Most U.S. presidents have a Presidential Center.
According to the Xinhua news agency, Obama highlighted the American ideal that states, “There shall be no king, no lord, no bondman, and no subject.” This remark resonates with the recent nationwide “No King” protests and marches.
He praised the residents of Minneapolis, Minnesota, indirectly criticizing Trump’s immigration policies. Obama noted that people showed solidarity by helping their neighbors, even in harsh weather, sometimes assisting strangers because they knew it was the right thing to do.
He expressed hope that the new center would demonstrate the value of America’s democratic reality.
Obama first came to Chicago in 1985 at the age of 23 as a community organizer. In his speech, he recounted how he met his wife, Michelle Obama, started a family, and launched his political career close to the Presidential Center.
Michelle Obama, who grew up in the South Side of Chicago, also praised her husband’s positive outlook, capabilities, work ethic, courage, and achievements during the inauguration.
She stated that no one has the right to decide who is more American.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Joe Biden, and their wives attended the ceremony, which drew a crowd of thousands. Local media reports indicated that President Trump was not invited. The Obama Presidential Center will open to the public on Friday.
