Beijing, August 25: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Tuesday to discuss ways to maintain peace and stability in border areas and enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Doval, who is India’s special representative on the India-China border issue, arrived in Beijing on a two-day visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China.
On Tuesday, Doval and Wang Yi will hold the 25th round of talks between special representatives regarding the India-China border issue. Before this meeting, Doval engaged with the Chinese Vice President to explore measures to improve relations between the two countries.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “On August 25, NSA Ajit Doval met with His Excellency Vice President Han Zheng regarding the India-China border issue. Prior to the 25th round of talks, NSA Doval and Vice President Han discussed strengthening peace and stability in border areas and enhancing bilateral relations in accordance with the agreements made by the leaders of both countries on economic, political, and multilateral platforms.”
Earlier on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that both India and China would continue in-depth discussions on the border issue in line with the spirit of the agreements reached by their leaders.
He noted that the meeting of special representatives on the China-India border question serves as a primary channel for border negotiations and an important platform for dialogue on mutual concerns.
Lin Jian reminded that last August, both countries successfully held the 24th meeting of special representatives, during which extensive discussions on the border issue took place, leading to several agreements.
He emphasized that both sides would continue in-depth discussions on the border issue in accordance with the agreements made by their leaders and work together to maintain peace and stability in border areas. Additionally, both countries will exchange views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues.
India has consistently stated that the situation in border areas directly impacts the broader bilateral relations with China.
Earlier this month, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked, “We have always emphasized in discussions with the Chinese side regarding border-related matters that we take these issues very seriously, and maintaining peace and stability in these areas is of utmost importance.”
Both nations also reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) held on August 6, where open discussions took place.
