Speculations Rise as Former AIADMK Ministers Join TVK

Chennai, June 6: Speculation is mounting in Tamil Nadu politics regarding former AIADMK ministers Shanmugam and Vijay, who may join the Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi (TVK) this Sunday alongside other leaders.

Since the 2026 election results, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu has been rapidly evolving. The news of this potential shift has intensified speculation. In the recent elections, TVK emerged as the largest party, securing 107 seats but falling short of a majority.

To form a government, Vijay sought support from the DMK-led coalition parties. TVK received initial backing from Congress, which separated from the DMK alliance to support the TVK government. This alliance has resulted in the party acquiring two ministerial positions and a seat in the Rajya Sabha.

Initially, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) decided to support the government from outside. However, they later joined the government, each receiving a ministerial position.

The CPI(M) and CPI have provided unconditional support to the government. Political tensions escalated when AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran accused TVK of luring away his party’s MLA, Kamaraj, through political bargaining.

A faction of disgruntled AIADMK legislators later returned under the guidance of S.P. Velumani, led by party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. However, several key leaders have remained outside the party.

Former ministers C.V. Shanmugam and C. Vijay are among those whose absence from the party has sparked speculation about their political futures. Nonetheless, no leader has made a public announcement yet.

Former AIADMK minister Vellamandi Natarajan and several other leaders have already joined the ruling party. If more leaders switch parties, TVK’s position in Tamil Nadu politics could significantly strengthen.
