New Delhi, June 12: The 2026 FIFA World Cup has not started well for South Africa. In their opening match, South Africa faced a 0-2 defeat against Mexico. Following the loss, head coach Hugo Broos raised concerns about the referee’s decisions during the match. South Africa’s defense appeared notably weak against Mexico.
During the game, South Africa was forced to play with only nine players after receiving two red cards. Players Sphelele Sithole and Thembinkosi Lorch were sent off. In the post-match press conference, Broos stated that he had no complaints about the first red card but disagreed with the decision regarding the second. He believed that the Mexican player had committed a foul in the incident that led to his player’s dismissal. Broos described the referee’s perspective as unfortunate for his team.
However, the coach did not place the entire blame on the referee’s decisions. He acknowledged that his team started the match under pressure, facing the host nation in a packed stadium. After the first 20 minutes, South Africa managed to regain control of the game. Broos admitted that the primary reason for the loss was his team’s own mistakes.
He noted that players lost possession in two critical situations where it was unnecessary. Mexico capitalized on these errors, scoring two goals to secure the win. Following this defeat, South Africa must improve in their upcoming group stage matches. Coach Broos believes the team needs to address its defensive weaknesses quickly to maintain hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
